Praise to the bicycle. Difficult but fascinating text on the use of reasonable means of communication. 
Tutto cominciò con il cuscinetto a sfere, l’invenzione della seconda metà dell’Ottocento grazie alla quale tanto l’automobile quanto la bicicletta diventano possibili. E lo diventano in contemporanea, dunque è falso pensare alla bicicletta come a qualcosa di arretrato e di preindustriale, quasi un ritorno all’età della pietra! A un dato momento si apre un bivio di portata storica: da una parte la strada che conduce a una maggiore libertà nell’equità, dall’altra l’illusione di una maggiore velocità progressivamente paralizzante. Rispettivamente: il mondo della bicicletta e quello dell’automobile.
E’ Ivan Illich a sottolineare questo passaggio cruciale dell’umana evoluzione nel saggio Elogio della bicicletta, finalmente tradotto in Italia da Bollati Boringhieri a oltre trent’anni dalla stesura originale. Il testo, nonostante i cambiamenti socioeconomici e culturali e i decenni trascorsi, è di un’attualità straordinaria, tanto più che Illich aveva visto bene verso dove la società dell’automobile ci avrebbe portato.
La sua è un’analisi scientifica, lucida, che nulla concede al sentimentalismo, e forse sta proprio Hence its strength. The reasons why we should push to change direction are rational and objective and have a strength in need.
